Preparing to hang a left! 

Giancarlo PEDOTE, the skipper of the boat Prysmian Group, is continuing to make headway this lunchtime with over 250 nautical miles to go to the legendary Cape HORN. “The wind is increasingly strong and it’s getting increasingly cold. Quite frankly, it’s not a pleasant place. I’m looking out for the boat because quite honestly, nothing is very pleasant at the moment. I’m eager to get around to the other side so I can have a bit of a breather”, explained the Italian skipper, who should make the rounding early doors on Tuesday. Cape Horn takes its name from the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands and was christened as such by the merchant, Jacob Le Maire. Accompanied by the sailor Willem Schouten, the latter rounded the most southerly tip of South America for the first time on 31 January 1616. Tradition has it that a Cape Horner earns the right to wear a gold earring in their left ear. Another custom states that a sailor who has sailed past the three capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn) is bestowed the privilege of being able to “piss and spit into the wind”. Watch this space 😊
