With the skipper of Prysmian Group currently in 9th position in his Vendée Globe debut, Giancarlo Pedote is continuing to learn what he’s really made of whilst observing the nature around him. “When I set sail on the Vendée Globe, I didn’t really know how I was going to keep myself occupied during my free time. Ultimately, after 49 days of racing, I realise that you don’t get that much time to yourself because amidst the strategic choices, the manœuvres and sleep, my days are very full-on. I have a lot of audio books on iTunes but I’ve realised that the moment I start reading them, I’m asleep within minutes… As a result, I’m only on my first chapter in this race.”
The 45-year-old sailor is continuing to make headway eastwards towards Cape Horn, which is currently situated over 2,300 nautical miles ahead of his boat, which equates to around 4,300 km. It’s a key passage in his race around the world and he’s set to round it in about a week’s time.
